The collective works of any artist can serve as a broad reflection of the creator’s personality, style, interests, and experiences.  Whether it is a painter of artwork, a composer of music, a writer of stories, or a director of film, the works that they produce can give insight into their personal style.  However, over a span of time an artist can progress and adapt to have a new approach to their creative outlet.  The end product of this progressive evolution could look nothing like the beginning seeds planted years before.  This transition can take years to complete and can go in any direction.  One example is the works of The Beatles.  Going from the gentle rock of “I want to hold your hand” to the more psychedelic rock of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”, they were able to gradually transition into a different sound while still pleasing fans that enjoyed their earlier music.  An artists progression can have a greater success with gradual transitions over time so that fans can continue to enjoy new art with a familiar style, instead of drastic changes that seem to stray to far from what is expected.  This transition can only really be seen retrospectively because it not only encompasses past and present work but also what it leads to in the future.
